I still remember being 15 or so when I began asking Mum to buy me perfume. It coincides with that interesting time during puberty, when I recall wanting to smell beautiful for a boy, or party and overtime it became my own 'trade mark' smell.
Fast forward to 33 and I have now gone only 2 years without wearing perfume after having a baby and feeling uncomfortable putting something on my skin that would rub off on my newborn's delicate skin.
In reflection, that's still almost half my life of covering myself in perfume, not to mention all the other harmful chemicals that were/still are on and around me.
As the wellness industry evolves at an epic pace and our generation(s) are experiencing the information overload of this evolution, we are being hit with so much information around how to choose kinder products to clean, wash, beautify and heal ourselves.
You might have already heard it, and if you haven't, you may well find yourself in as much shock as I did to learn about the reports around the harmful side effects that perfume can have on the body and brain. And, these reports aren’t isolating perfume as we know it - in a spray bottle, but also perfume in any product we use, including some candles, room sprays and even paper! It's freakin' everywhere! Shit...
Currently there is no law that requires manufacturers to list all the harmful chemicals that they put into their products to help give them an appealing fragrance. By regulation manufactures only have to list one word on their product labels, which is “fragrance”, and this can hide a cocktail of more than 100 toxic ingredients.
Fragrances commonly contain phthalates, which are chemicals that help the scents to last longer. Research reports are showing that the side effects of long-term exposure to phthalates are startling, causing potential chaos to the central nervous system, cancer, endocrine disruption, birth defects & respiratory problems. The toxic villains are very hard to avoid because manufacturers are not required to list them on their ingredient labels. Therefore, the only way to reduce the toxic load is to stop using anything that contains a synthetic fragrance.
But fear not! There are so many alternatives available to replace your harmful bottle of chemicals. The essential oil industry has gone wild and this has a great deal to do with the fact that people are becoming smarter in the way they clean their houses, wash their skin and of course, apply beauty treatments.
And, not only do Mother Nature's essential oils smell incredible, research is now showing that smelling and rubbing the oils directly on the skin can also help us to regulate our nervous system, hormonal system and affect our moods.
Jess and I fell in love with this healing modality, but of course, we wanted to add a HartRokkin' hint of good vibes by infusing Crystals into our oil blends.
Today we have three different blends in our HartRoks range. Each blend took many months of testing to perfect. We researched the qualities of not only the Crystals, which you'll find at the bottom of every hand made roll on bottle, but we also read up on the actual essential oils we chose to use. Each oil will have its’ own list of benefits.
